There is something extra special about traveling to Italy in the spring. The beautiful flowers, cooler temperatures, and fewer people make Italy during Spring a dream destination!
Imagine sipping a coffee while sitting at a cafe in Rome’s Piazza Navona. Or experiencing your very first Gondola ride in Venice. Or Enjoying a wine tasting in the Vineyards of Tuscany.
Spring is the perfect time to explore Italy!
Packing the essentials for an Italian vacation during Spring time, will seriously impact the quality of your trip!
The more prepared you are, the more enjoyable the trip will be.
While stationed in Germany, I discovered Spring in Europe is my favorite!
That being said, I’ve also learned how important it is to dress appropriately for the unpredictable spring weather in Europe. These tips have been so beneficial for traveling in Italy!
Considering your itinerary is vital when working on your packing list for Spring in Italy. You will likely want to see as much as possible on your vacation, which means long days, lots of walking, and plenty of sightseeing and tours.
This post is for those who want to dress more comfortably while looking cute; it’s not for those who want to have high-end fashion tips.
Sure, traveling through Milan, we saw many people who were dressed very fashionably. But that didn’t feel typical if Italy.
That being said, people dressing fashionably was not the everyday trend during our two-week trip through Italy.
We also travel with little kids, so my priority is always function, comfort, and cute!

Spring in Italy
WeatherSpark is a neat site. Here, you can add the cities and the month you plan on visiting, and it will give you a more detailed report, including average temperatures and chances of rain.
The average temperatures for Central Italy in March can range from 45 F to 55 F.
The Average temperature for Central Italy in April is 64 F to 72 F. (These stats also came from Weather Spark.) The sunny days in April can feel quite warm!
Northern Italy is a little cooler, and Southern Italy is a little warmer.
Layering is Essential
While you’re in this Italy trip planning phase, it is vital to understand the unpredictability of the weather in Italy during Spring.
The days can quickly go from cold to warm and back to cold again. And don’t forget the chance of rain! You can easily have a yucky rainy morning and end with the most beautiful afternoon and evening.
Layering should be the key component of your Italian vacation outfit.
Packing layers ensures comfort and ultimately allows you to have the best time on your Italian vacation.
Think Mix and Match Pieces
Bringing mix-and-match pieces gives you a little more fun and style in your Spring wardrobe. The more ideas you can throw together with fewer articles of clothing, the better.
Pack Light
The last thing you want to do is overpack. I think I inherently struggle with the idea, ” But what if I need this or that?”
Packing light is probably one of the most important considerations on your spring packing list for Italy.
If you are planning an Italy vacation, you will likely visit different Italian cities, which means traveling from one city to the next. Totting around suitcases is not fun while navigating the cobblestoned streets and train stations.
Trust me—we have been there!

Less is more!
Dress Up with Accessories
A cute sun hat, sunglasses, jewelry, and a scarf can go a long way!
Accessorising is a great option for those who want to express their personal style.
Bring a Day Bag
A cute tote bag or crossbody bag is essential for carrying your daily travel essentials.
When we travel, I pack our essentials in diaper bags or carriers. Otherwise, I’ll bring a more fashionable backpack or crossbody bag.
What to include in your Packing list for Spring in Italy
Comfortable Shoes
I cannot stress this is enough! Planning a trip to Italy means lots of walking.
My husband and I averaged 10 miles a day… 10 MILES! That is a lot of walking!
If you visit Rome, Verona, and many other Italian cities, some roads date back to the ancient Roman times. Imagine horribly uneven roads!
Also, most Italian cities have cobblestoned streets. Wear the comfortable shoes.
Consider water-resistant or waterproof shoes. I love my Cloud 5 Sneakers and my Cloud rainproof shoes. They are by far the best shoes for traveling.
Tip: If you plan on purchasing new shoes for your Italy vacation, be sure to break them in a few weeks before your trip.
Dress Shoes
For evenings out, consider a pair of simple, cute flats! Neutral or black flats are super versatile and easy to pack.
If you’re visiting the South of Italy and are expecting hot weather, bring a pair of sandals.
Tip: I wouldn’t suggest wearing sandals for those heavy walking days. But, comfortable sandals are a perfect option for dressing up, or enjoying a more relaxing day. It’s more likely you won’t need the sandals unless you travel to Italy during the Summer months.
Ankle boots can be a good option for those traveling North of Italy, with the weather forecast predicting cooler temperatures. I suggest saving these booties for styling up or enjoying an evening out on the town.
Trench Coat or Jacket
If you visit Italy in early Spring, expect colder temperatures and a higher chance of rain. The warm days increase from mid- to late April; and the chances of experiencing wet weather decrease as Spring transitions into Summer.
Ideally, if you’re traveling in April and March, I suggest including a medium-weight, water-resistant jacket in your spring packing list of essentials for Italy.
A trenchcoat is a good idea for those who want to dress more stylishly. I also love my Columbia Jacket. It’s not stylish, but it is so functional.
An even nicer perk is that you can easily fold them into your day bag. They don’t take up much space, and they are light.
Tops
Consider your tops some of the most versatile! I love a simple white T- or V-neck. They are so easy to pair with jewelry and layer with a cute sweater or blazer. Pack versatile tops.
Bring a couple of simple fitted short sleeve shirts, and a couple of cute long sleeved or buttoned down shirts. Keep in mind, you want to dress in layers.
Tip: If you’re traveling to the Southern regions of Italy during the warmer months, consider bringing a couple of tank tops. However, plan on getting a cover to adhere to any dress code. A scarf is a great option.
Bottoms
Honestly, Jeans will be your best bet! Consider what’s in style at the time, and that can easily help you feel more fashionable.
I love my stretchy skinny jeans. They are so easy to dress in and perfect for long day trips.
Tip: For those day trips, you want to wear comfortable clothes.
Cute pair of pants, or a skirt.
Depending on how long your trip to Italy will be, you may or may not want to bring another pair of pants to dress up, or a cute skirt.
Tip: If you choose to bring a skirt, consider knee-length or longer. Less skin is better, especially when entering religious monuments and churches.
Bring a pair of leggings to pair with your skirt.
A Maxidress or a Sun Dress
A maxidress is a cute option for warmer weather! Imagine a day in Venice, where you’re not walking miles and miles.
There are so many incredible instagrammable spots in Venice, that a maxidress would be perfect!
Sun dresses can be very easy to pack!
Tip: Many churches have a dress code that requires the knees to be covered.
A Scarf or Wrap
This is a great Spring and Summer season tip for Italy. Honestly, you would not have a complete packing list for spring in Italy without it!
It’s perfect for a chillier evening while enjoying an aperitif on a square or to adhere to the dress code of churches and museums.
It is one of the most essential must-have items for your trip to Italy.
Additional Items to Include in Your Spring Packing List for Italy
Winter layers
If traveling to the Dolomites, pack some warm layers, warm coats, and cold weather accessories like gloves and hats.
Tip: Packing Cubes are really helpful for organization.
Warmer Weather Essentials
If you’re traveling to the coastal areas of Italy during late Spring, you may get a day or two of really warm weather! Bring a swim suit, just in case.
We visited the beach in Genoa during the first week of April, and although the weather was very pleasant, it was too cold to swim.

2 Week Packing List: Spring in Italy
Here is a great 2-week packing list I used for our two-week trip to Italy, during the first two weeks of April.
Customize this list to fit your itinerary. And remember, pack light.

- 1 Pair of casual or prettier pants
- 2-3 Long sleeve tops

Essentials to Pack In Your Day Bag
A Reusable Water Bottle
A reusable water bottle, Many of the public fountains have drinking water.
Something crazy I’velearned while living in Europe: purchasing water at restaurants can be more expensive than beer and wine.
Tip: When traveling with kidsWe put our daily travel essentials in the baby carriers. Sometimes my husband would wear his fanny pack, which made accessing important documents, debit cards, credit cards, and cash so much easier.
For those traveling with little kids, don’t forget to pack their travel essentials.
ID & Copy of Travel Documents
A copy of your travel documents. Sites like the Colosseum in Rome require a valid ID to enter. It is always a good idea to keep a copy of all your documents on your person.
Portable Chargers
Plan to use your phone a lot for photos, self-guided audio tours, and navigation. You will want to have that portable charger.
I love this portable battery charger pack.
Umbrella or Ponchos
No packing list for Spring in Italy is complete without the rain gear accessories. Truthfully, it can be hard to navigate some of the crowds and narrow streets with umbrellas., especially cities like Venice.
Packing a poncho is a great space saver option. (Disposable ponchos and Reusable ponchos)

My Final Thoughts on this Spring Packing List for Italy
Packing for Italy in the Spring doesn’t have to be intimidating. It’s all about comfort, versatility, with a hint of effortless style.
All you need is the proper layers, a few accessories, comfortable walking shoes, and your daily travel bag.
Don’t over think it! This Spring in Italy Packing list will prepare you for the rainy days, exceptionally long day tours, and beautiful relaxing sunsets with an aperitif!
Flexibility is key—and if you’re traveling to Italy with little kids, you will want to make your concerns about what to wear in Italy during Spring the least of your worries!
I would love to hear your feedback? Do you have any suggestions for me to include in my list?
