And when we received orders to move to Germany, Brussels was at the very top of my Christmas market bucket list.
Honestly, visiting the Christmas markets was one of the things I looked forward to most.
Having visited my fair share of Christmas markets across Europe, I can confidently say that Brussels stands out. The experience completely exceeded my expectations.
I’ll never forget the moment we first stepped into Grand-Place. The Christmas tree was massive, and there was something so magical about the way the lights twinkled against the historic architecture.
Fast forward to that evening, and the orchestrated light show in the same square left me in awe.
From the fresh Belgian waffles to the warm Glühwein, it was an absolute delight as we explored the city and indulged in the festive treats.

Magical Atmosphere in the Heart of Brussels
If there were ever a magical market in Europe, it would be the Christmas markets in Brussels, Belgium. Oh my goodness, was it special!
The beautifully decorated wooden chalet stalls, twinkling Christmas lights, and the scent of mulled wine and sweet cinnamon-coated nuts—honestly, it makes you feel like you’ve walked straight into a magical winter wonderland.
But what really makes the traditional Christmas markets in Belgium stand out the most? It’s the stunning Grand-Place light and sound show. It’s truly incredible and sets Brussels apart from other traditional Christmas markets.
I can’t tell you how happy I was that my mother came along to help with our two little kids. I would’ve been devastated to miss out on this experience!
Delicious Belgium and Festive Treats
I was pleasantly surprised by the incredible culinary delights at the Belgian Christmas market. While you’ll certainly find the usual Christmas market fare, like bratwurst and hot drinks, it’s the Belgian specialties that really stood out.
- Belgian Waffles: The warm Belgian waffles were, of course, a must-try—crispy on the outside and perfectly soft on the inside, topped with everything from powdered sugar to decadent chocolate.
- Belgian Chocolate: Rich, velvety, and utterly irresistible.
- Hearty Dishes: From the creamy, cheesy goodness of tartiflette to the rich, comforting stoofvlees (Belgian beef stew), there’s no shortage of savory dishes to satisfy your cravings.
- Glühwein & Hot Chocolate: Experiencing the Brussels Christmas Market is not just about the food! You’ve got to enjoy the quintessential Glühwein, a hot mulled wine that’s perfect for warming up. And of course, you can’t forget about the Hot Chocolate!
I didn’t get a chance to try these heartier dishes myself, though—it was just so much easier navigating the market with little kids while munching on a brot (a classic, simple, and satisfying choice)
Tip: If you’re hoping to snag one of those collectible Glühwein mugs, I was never able to find one! They served the warm drinks in plastic cups, which was a bit of a disappointment.
Amazing Christmas Shopping Experience
I’ve always loved the homemade goods at German Christmas markets so that you can imagine my excitement for the shopping opportunities at the Brussels Christmas market.
Not only did they have beautifully crafted Christmas ornaments, but many of the market stalls also offered everything from intricate jewelry and delicate lacework to beautifully decorated tin boxes filled with Belgian chocolates.
What really sets the Brussels market apart, though, is its multicultural influence.
With vendors from all over, you’ll find a wide variety of goods and foods, offering a delightful mix of traditions and unique products. Perfect for Christmas shopping!
Where to Find the Five Christmas Markets in Brussels
The Brussels Christmas markets, known as Winter Wonders (Plaisirs d’Hiver), are located in the historic center of Brussels and span across the city, comprising five distinct markets.
These five Brussels Christmas market locations are all within walking distance of each other, making it easy to explore them all on foot.
Grand-Place
This is, without a doubt, the most impressive part of the entire Brussels Christmas experience.
Located in the city’s central square, which is also a UNESCO World Heritage site, you’ll find an open square dominated by a massive, beautifully decorated Christmas tree.
But the real magic happens once the sun goes down.
A light show, choreographed to Christmas music, is displayed across the square, creating a truly magical atmosphere. It’s a sight you’ll never forget.
Honestly, this is the main reason we included Brussels in our Christmas market itinerary—and it did not disappoint.
I could watch it every single year if given the choice. It was the best part of our Brussels itinerary.
Place Saint-Catherine
This market is located in the Sainte-Catherine district, right in the heart of the historic city center. It’s one of the main locations for Winter Wonders, and it’s a must-see.
According to the official website, you’ll find over 200 wooden stalls offering a mix of traditional food, gifts, and handmade crafts.
The bustling atmosphere makes it a perfect spot for anyone looking to soak in the holiday spirit while shopping for unique souvenirs.
Marché aux Poissons
Historically, this area was Brussels’ fish market, so once I learned that, the Christmas market’s seafood focus made a lot more sense!
It’s located near Place Sainte-Catherine, and it has a more relaxed, cozy vibe compared to the busier areas.
Known for its seafood-themed treats, Marché aux Poissons offers something a little different—think oysters or seafood platters, perfect for those looking for a taste of Brussels’ maritime history during the holiday season.
Place de la Bourse
This area is more focused on fun activities than traditional market stalls, making it the perfect spot for families.
From the ice skating rink to the Ferris wheel, there’s something for everyone to enjoy, making it an ideal place for some family-friendly holiday fun.
Place de Brouckère
It’s so close to Place de la Bourse that I honestly didn’t even realize it was a separate market at first.
The atmosphere here feels very traditional, with plenty of food vendors and musical performances adding to the festive charm.
How to get to the Brussels Christmas Markets
Train
Traveling by train is definitely the way to go—especially if you’re traveling with kids.
In our experience, trains are much more enjoyable than driving, and our entire Christmas market vacation was done by train with zero complaints!
The main train station in Brussels is Brussels Central Station, which is well-connected to cities across Belgium, France, Germany, and the Netherlands.
From Brussels Central, it’s just a short walk to the Grand-Place and the surrounding Christmas market areas.
Airplane
Brussels Airport (BRU) is the main international airport, located about 12 kilometers from the city center.
From there, you can easily take the Brussels Airport train, which will get you to Brussels Central Station in just about 20 minutes.

As a lover of Christmas trees, it’s no surprise that I’m adding this to my must-see list. The tree at Grand-Place is a beauty!
During the day, you can admire its grandeur while soaking in the stunning historical buildings that surround the square.

I absolutely love European Christmas Markets, but I also have a soft spot for charming cities.
That’s why, whenever we travel, we make it a point to explore the city beyond the markets. And let me tell you—Brussels is incredibly charming!
One of my favorite things to do is wander through the cobblestone streets, soaking in the beauty of the city’s historic architecture.

Go Ice Skating at Place de la Bourse
I absolutely love it when Christmas markets have ice rinks—it truly adds to the festive atmosphere! My kids are a little young to skate themselves, but we always enjoy watching others glide across the ice.
It’s a fun way to soak in the holiday spirit, whether you’re skating or just enjoying the scene!
Ride the Ferris Wheel at Place de la Bourse
There’s something magical about a giant Ferris wheel at a Christmas market, but when it’s illuminated, lighting up the night sky, it’s even more special!
While we didn’t get the chance to ride it ourselves, I can only imagine how spectacular the views of the Christmas markets and the city would be from up there.
Holiday Crafts
I wanted to mention something to keep an eye out for. I didn’t spot the usual Christmas market craft tents for kids, but I did read that they exist!
If your kids love making handmade ornaments and other Christmas crafts, be on the lookout. If you find one, please let me know where it is—I’d love to hear about it!
Ride the Merry-Go-Rounds
There’s a unique merry-go-round located in the Place Sainte-Catherine market area that you won’t want to miss.
The best way I can describe it is as having a steampunk, mechanical vibe. The animals aren’t the typical cute ones you’d expect—these are fascinating, almost like machinery.
It’s an unusual but fun twist on the traditional carousel!
Where to Stay in Brussels for the Christmas Markets
We stayed in an Airbnb in the Sainte-Catherine district and absolutely loved it!
I did some research, and from what I found, these are the most recommended areas to stay in for the best experience during the Christmas markets.
Sainte-Catherine Area
I’m placing this area first because that’s where our Airbnb was located, and we really enjoyed it.
The Sainte-Catherine district is vibrant but quieter than the main square, making it a perfect spot for those who want to be close to the action but also enjoy some peace.
It’s within walking distance of the Grand-Place, so you can easily pop over to see the markets whenever you like. It’s also a great area if you’re visiting Brussels with kids.
The Grand-Place Area
The Grand-Place is the city center and the heart of Brussels, making it a fantastic choice for those who want to be in the middle of everything.
This is especially great for first-time visitors. It’s lively, with everything from festive light shows to restaurants and shops right at your doorstep. While it can be noisy, it’s ideal for those who don’t mind a bit of hustle and bustle.
We even saw some people watching the light show right from their windows!
Saint-Géry Area
Located just a short walk from the Christmas markets, Saint-Géry is a trendy neighborhood popular for its bars and cafés.
It has a more local vibe and, from what I’ve read, is a bit less touristy, so that you can get a real sense of the city’s culture. It’s a nice option if you’re looking for a quieter area that’s still close to the markets.
Ixelles Area
I didn’t get a chance to explore Ixelles myself, but based on my research, it’s a residential neighborhood known for its trendy shops, food scene, and parks.
Although it’s a bit farther from the Christmas markets, it’s well-connected to public transport, making it easy to reach the market areas. If you’re looking for a more laid-back, authentic vibe, Ixelles could be a great choice.
Top Tips for Visiting The Brussels Christmas Market
Do Your Christmas Market Shopping During the Day
We always prioritize exploring the main areas of the Christmas markets during the day.
It’s so much easier to browse the wooden chalets and do your Christmas shopping with fewer crowds. Plus, it’s much simpler to navigate with little kids in tow!
Enjoy the Magical Lights and Show After Dark
One of the highlights of our trip was the light and sound show at Grand-Place. I was so thankful we traveled to Brussels with my mom.
If she hadn’t stayed in with the kids, we would have missed it! Of all the European Christmas markets we’ve visited, this is a must-see after dark.
The streets light up, the market stalls are decorated beautifully, the glorious illuminated Ferris wheel, and the light show—well, that’s the main event!
Bring Cash
Many vendors at the Christmas markets don’t accept debit or credit cards, so it’s always a good idea to carry cash.
If you fall short, don’t worry—there are plenty of ATMs throughout the city.
Dress in Layers
Winters in Europe can get really cold, and not dressing appropriately can negatively impact your experience.
The good news? You can always purchase some handmade mittens and hats at the market if you forget! However, it’s always better to be prepared.

Try Belgian Food Beyond the Christmas Markets
Like I mentioned earlier, I absolutely love Christmas markets, but we always prioritize exploring the city as well—which means sampling the local cuisine!
Dishes like Moules-frites (mussels and fries) are a popular choice for seafood lovers, and stoofvlees (beef stew) is perfect for warming up in the winter.
As for me, my favorites were the hot Belgian waffles and the rich, delicious chocolates—you can’t leave Belgium without trying both!
Use Public Transport
Brussels has a fantastic public transport system. From trams and trains to buses, they are the easiest and most efficient way to get from one area to the next.
It’s especially helpful during the holiday season when walking through crowded streets can be challenging.
Go During the Week
When traveling with little kids, we typically prefer to visit Christmas markets during the day. However, in Brussels, we made an exception to explore the markets in the evening as well.
One thing I found was that visiting during the week is always less crowded than on weekends.
If you can plan your Christmas market itinerary accordingly, you’ll be able to enjoy the festive atmosphere without having to fight through large crowds.

Absolutely, yes!
It was even more magical than I could have imagined.
The Brussels Christmas Market offered something for the entire family to enjoy, and the city itself is absolutely beautiful.
From the different markets and delicious food stalls to the grandiose light show, it’s one of the best Christmas markets I’ve ever visited.
It’s truly an unforgettable experience. And one of the most unique experiences I’ve been blessed to share with my family.
